The Science Behind the Crop

Hot Days Are Hard on Corn... But Hot Nights Can Be Even Worse

Introduction

Everyone notices when the daytime temperature climbs above 100°F. Conversations quickly turn to how much stress the corn must be under. While extreme daytime heat certainly affects corn, many producers overlook another factor that often has an even greater influence on grain yield—the temperature during the night.

Corn, like all living plants, never truly "goes to sleep." During daylight hours it captures sunlight through photosynthesis and manufactures sugars that become the building blocks for leaves, stalks, roots, and ultimately grain. After sunset, however, the plant begins using part of those stored sugars simply to stay alive.

Think of nighttime as the corn plant's recovery period. The cooler the night, the less energy the plant uses for maintenance respiration. More of the sugars produced during the day remain available to fill kernels and increase yield.

When nighttime temperatures remain elevated, especially above about 70–75°F, the corn plant continues to respire at a much higher rate. Instead of storing carbohydrates for grain production, it burns more of them just maintaining its living tissues. The result is less energy available for kernel development and reduced yield potential.

Why Cool Nights Matter

Cool nighttime temperatures allow the corn plant to:

  • Recover from daytime heat stress.

  • Reduce respiration losses.

  • Conserve carbohydrates.

  • Continue root growth.

  • Improve pollination success.

  • Increase kernel depth and grain fill.

Simply put, the plant spends the day earning energy and the night spending it. Cooler nights help the plant keep more of what it earned.

During Pollination

This period is where warm nights become especially damaging.

High nighttime temperatures can:

  • Reduce pollen viability.

  • Shorten pollen shed.

  • Delay silk emergence.

  • Increase the chance of poor pollination.

  • Reduce kernels per ear.

Even fields with adequate irrigation can lose yield if several consecutive nights remain excessively warm during pollination.

During Grain Fill

After pollination, every kernel becomes a small storage tank that must be filled with starch.

When nights remain warm:

  • Respiration increases.

  • Less sugar reaches the kernels.

  • Grain fill slows.

  • Kernel weight decreases.

  • Test weight may decline.

  • Final yield suffers.

Many producers notice "smaller ears" after a hot summer. Frequently, the issue is not fewer kernels but lighter kernels because the plant consumed more of its stored carbohydrates each night.

Why the High Plains Often Have an Advantage

One of the advantages of farming in Colorado and western Kansas as well as other areas on the High Plains  is our normally lower humidity.

Dry air allows temperatures to cool rapidly after sunset.

Even after a 100°F Day, nighttime temperatures often fall into the lower 60s.

Those cooler nights allow corn plants to recover and conserve energy, partially offsetting daytime heat stress.

Unfortunately, when warm air masses settle over the region and nighttime temperatures remain in the 70s for several consecutive nights, corn loses much of that advantage.

Joe's Crop Tip

Don't judge heat stress by the afternoon temperature alone. Look at the overnight low. Corn can often tolerate very hot days if nights cool into the low 60s. Several warm nights in a row may reduce yield more than a single extremely hot afternoon.

Final Thoughts

Successful corn production isn't determined only by how much sunlight the crop receives during the day. It also depends on how efficiently the plant conserves the energy it produces. Cool nights allow the corn plant to recharge, conserve carbohydrates, and devote more energy to filling grain rather than simply surviving another hot day.

The next time someone says, "It was over 100 degrees today," ask them one more question: "How cool did it get last night?" The answer may tell you just as much about the crop's yield potential as the afternoon high.
